The Pushouts – Film Preview (Follow up Discussion Workshop in Session 2)

This first session will look at the documentary, The Pushouts (a follow up discussion workshop will be offered in Session 2) : More than half of Latinos grow up in poverty, and they are half as likely to have a college degree than their white counterparts. The same holds for African American students. What can schools, colleges, universities and communities do to reverse the trend and prepare our youth for careers and success? This documentary profiles a group of students who are “pushed out” of the educational system and the mentors who are shifting that outcome. The Pushouts is a CPB AMERICAN GRADUATE documentary.


How to be Attendance Avengers – The Development of a Functioning, Data Driven Attendance Team

In this workshop participants will learn the importance of developing an active, diverse attendance team. They will learn how consistently looking at data can drive interventions at various school support levels ie. Attendance clerk, nursing, after school activities, etc. They will learn about specific incentives that were developed at Hayes, "Target 10". Participants will also have an opportunity to hear from student(s) and possibly a family how interventions have helped improved school engagement and attendance.

Analyzing School-Wide Attendance, Clarissa Hastings

What if we educated parents and students about the importance of attendance through a school-wide approach using scientific research and data analysis? We would use brochures to educate parents about existing laws and district policies. Students would keep track of their attendance through graphing. During Parent/Teacher Conferences, the data that students collected and analyzed about their individual attendance would be presented to parents. We could have school-wide rewards like the Atten-Dance. Students might track classroom attendance to compare to other classes and to see how attendance can be improved. If we want to improve attendance, we can take a team approach to making parents and students partners to improving attendance through education and analysis of data collected and analyzed by students. Not to mention, students would be learning how to demonstrate science skills (research, collecting data, and analyzing it--and this incorporates reading, math, and writing).

Tales from a Four-Year Attendance Team

BHS Attendance team will give a quick review of how to start and maintain an attendance team, ways to communicate to administration regarding attendance teams, creating initiatives within a school for all students, and sharing some personal insight and experience on a fourth-year attendance team.


Aligning Your School’s Attendance Support and Early Warning Systems

Many schools have begun to look at early warning indicators that tell them which students are at risk due to absences, negative behaviors, and/or academic issues. Participants will learn about some early warning data indicators and processes. This workshop will also give you strategies and ideas for aligning attendance team efforts and early warning indicator data into one system of outreach, interventions, and supports.

Lunch Lotto for Improved Attendance

Hawthorne Elementary Community School Council saw the need to reward students who had improved their attendance throughout the year. Lunch Lotto for Improved Attendance was then created in hopes of motivating all students to improve their attendance.

This talk will discuss some of the tools and techniques used at Governor Bent to motivate students to attend school. Examples include: 10-Day Attendance (Ticket-Tier 1), 5-Day Attendance Ticket (Tier 2), SPIN TO WIN, parking lot appreciations for families arriving on time, school wide recognition, and grade level competitions. We will put this into the format of a science board and will bring our spinning wheel to share.

It Takes a Village – Leveraging Volunteers to Increase Attendance

There are many passionate hearts in our communities that help to make our schools a clean, fun, and welcoming environment for students (and staff). Together as a community, we can help students develop positive habits which will lead to success in school and life; these habits start with showing up to school every day, ready to learn. This workshop will help educators better understand how they can utilize volunteers in their school setting to combat chronic absenteeism while building a positive school culture for students and staff.

We will walk the participants though the process we used to create our protocol and how we deal with chronic absences at the elementary school level. We will focus on how each school needs to use ideas, which are generated with their demographics in mind. We will discuss our tier intervention flow chart, which utilizes the entire staff and reaches 100 percent of our students.

Coordinating Teams to Maximize Impact

We will share our journey in combining the efforts of the Health and Wellness Team with other critical staff members to identify highest need students and develop supports for the students and their families. Team members adopt students that they feel they can have a connection with based on the staff members strengths and the students' needs. We can share what we accomplished our first year and what we plan to change for 2019-2020.

Using Simple Family Focused Questions to Improve Attendance

Engaging Students and Parents Through Personal Experience
Dan Frampton & Jonathan Dooley, Media Arts Collaborative Charter School, Sierra II
When we are trying to engage someone around issues of change, statistics, facts and figures rarely help us connect and lead to a discussion geared toward meaningful change. What does connect us to others and lay a foundation for change is our personal stories. When others see that we have experienced some of the same challenges or walked a similar path, we can connect, establish greater report and maybe even lay a foundation for change. By using our personal experiences of challenges we have faced and how they impacted our lives, our families and our communities we can show that we do understand what the families and youth we work with may be experiencing and how we can work together to find solutions. These relational meetings are a key concept in community organizing and can build connections in our schools and communities around the challenges that families face in regards to attendance.
