Gary Tonjes was graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 1978. He worked for the Roswell Chamber of Commerce, the Odessa, Texas Chamber of Commerce, and was President of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce for ten years. Gary joined Albuquerque Economic Development, Inc. (AED) as President in 1994.
AED is a non-profit corporation funded principally by leading members of the business community. AED assists existing industry in the region, and since 1960 has served as Albuquerque’s lead organization for the recruitment of more than 300 new companies to the metropolitan area, including Facebook’s new data center.
Gary received The Site Selectors Guild’s President’s Award for Excellence in Economic Development in 2013, the New Mexico Ethics in Business Award for Individual Excellence in 2014, the Industrial Asset Management Council’s Mary Jo Hanover Award in 2015, and was named one of ConsultantConnect’s Top 50 Economic Developers in North America in 2017.
